About the Project

Set forty years before Lincoln ended slavery and fifty years before Black Americans earned the right to vote, the African Company of New York was the first Black theatrical group in the country. They performed plays in a downtown Manhattan theatre, attracting both Black and white audiences. This ensemble drama, written by playwright Carlyle Brown, captures the impactful story of this progressive group.
