No taller than 5'. The young protagonist. Scout is intelligent, curious, outspoken, impulsive, funny, stubborn, and something of a tomboy. She has not yet learned to filter what she says, which makes her both comic and unexpectedly perceptive. Possesses tremendous naturalness and stage presence—the audience experiences much of Maycomb through Scout's eyes.

Scout's older brother. Athletic, imaginative and protective, Jem begins the story still very much a boy but is forced into a more adult understanding of injustice. The script introduces him as an active boy a few years older than Scout. Jem's emotional journey is substantial, particularly his faith in Atticus and his devastation over the trial's outcome. Handles humor, sibling sparring, physical action and some genuinely difficult emotional material.

Scout and Jem's visiting friend and Scout's childhood fiancé. The script describes him as a little older than Scout, small, blond, neat and well dressed, with an undercurrent of sophistication and a sudden, happy laugh. Jean calls him a pocket Merlin full of eccentric plans and fantasies. Funny, imaginative, precocious and theatrical, but also more vulnerable than he initially appears.
