5TRACY TURNBLAD
(Mezzo, G3–G5) Our unsuspecting protagonist: a big girl with big hair and an even bigger personality who's large and in charge. Confident, determined, sweet but strong in her convictions, and a romantic who loves to cut up the dance floor. Requires an excellent singer, dancer, and actor with wonderful stage presence. In 10+ numbers.
PENNY PINGLETON
(Mezzo belt, A3–G5) Tracy's lovable, dorky best friend; not the brightest, but well-meaning. Bursting to break free of her mother's strict control, she falls for Seaweed with childlike curiosity. Sweet voice and great comedic instincts.
AMBER VON TUSSLE
(Soprano, A3–F5) Link's girlfriend and Tracy's nemesis; the pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist princess of The Corny Collins Show. Can't dance but expects to win Miss Teenage Hairspray, and always needs to be the center of attention.
LINK LARKIN
(Tenor, G3–A5) Baltimore's biggest heartthrob, the star male dancer on The Corny Collins Show, and Tracy's dream guy. Hoping for a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. A charismatic triple threat with a sparkle in his eye.
SEAWEED J. STUBBS
(Tenor, F3–D5) Motormouth Maybelle's son, Tracy's classmate, and a standout dancer on the show; cocky but surprisingly lovable. Discriminated against for his skin color, he falls for Penny, and together they defy 1960s segregation. A strong singer, dancer, and actor. In 4+ numbers.
